Beattie promises manufacturing boost for Tesla's electric cars
If you think about the price of electricity in the U.S., Tesla offers a way to offset costs.
Tesla makes about as much electricity as California's utility runs on. But its cars can drive 100 miles per gallon, thanks to a battery system that charges from zero to 100 percent in five minutes. It can go from zero power to 70 miles per hour in as little as five minutes ” about as quick as a Tesla Model S, but with the added advantage of the fact that the Tesla is a plug-in hybrid.
So when the Model 3 is announced next month, it will cost about $35,000 to add a battery pack ” a big price cut from the Model S or Model X, but worth the extra range and range-extended range that will come with it.
In a presentation to reporters Tuesday, Musk revealed that Tesla's battery pack costs about $700 for a 100-kilowatt-hour pack, about $300 less than a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack that can go from 90 to 100 miles per hour.
It all makes sense, says Tesla's head of vehicle sales, Joe Jonas. "It doesn't need a complicated answer, but, in a lot of ways, it makes more sense to make electric cars today as opposed to 50 years ago or less."
When the first Model S was unveiled in 1990, it cost $27,000. The second Model S, with the electric motor that powers it, cost $50,000 or $60,000, with a starting price of about $29,000.

Buyers of those cars might have been looking forward to more money, Musk explained, and those cars were delivered to Tesla customers with about $3 million more in capital investment than if they'd paid full price for a more expensive Tesla.
"You could get a Model S today for the same price as today, at least at the dealerships," Musk said.
Tesla Motors chief Elon Musk said the $2,500 premium in the $35,000 price of a Tesla Model 3 comes due to the fact that the company sells its cars at its factory at Fremont, Calif., rather than at dealers, which are in Palo Alto, the company's hometown.
While Tesla is making more cars with the cheaper battery, it may be paying for that at the end of the line for a longer-range Model S.
